What are we talking about here????

You don't watch enough TV, Rick.

These new DNA tests to determine your "heritage" are all the rage. The TV is rife with advertisements to buy them. With them, you can "discover" your heritage based on their DNA analysis, called a "DNA test". They have been proven to be a scam, (identical triplets submitted their samples and all three of them had different genetic ancestry according to these DNA "experts"), yet they are selling like hotcakes. Primarily because the populace at large have become disciples of the newest religion: "Science". It has become so powerful that it doesn't matter even when SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE shows that a scam is being perpetrated by voodoo priests and witch doctors. If they claim to be "scientists" (priests of the new religion), they can sell snake-oil and cures for cancer. Just do it in the name of "Science".

But that wasn't the point of my original post. The original post was a play on words. DNA tests, aren't "tests" that you pass or fail. A more appropriate term would be "DNA analysis", but since originally DNA analyses were most often used as "tests" of paternity we have the "test" hangover.

Anyway, I just thought it was a funny pun.

A DNA test on me would most likely show I have Neanderthal ancestors. Hunting & gathering is in my genes.......Paul H

Great Paul, my sister just had one of those tests and there were some interesting results.

So it is all b0ll0cks then?

Depends on how you use the word "all". MOST of the claims they are making on American TV are almost too preposterous to imagine they have the gall to say them out loud, let alone on TV. "We can tell you're great, great, great, Irish grandfather had blue eyes and was a fisherman." I kid you not! There is NO WAY they can determine your "ancestry" based on your DNA. They CAN tell your race - mostly. They can INFER from that what continent your RECENT ancestors PROBABLY came from. Beyond that, it's balderdash.

But... There is something VERY important happening these days folks. LYING has gotten SO pervasive and PERMITTED that organizations and groups no longer have ANY compunction about BEING CAUGHT in a lie! IT DOESN'T MATTER! Probably 50% of what comes out of THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES' MOUTH IS A LIE. All he has to do is claim "Fake News". In fairness to him, HE'S RIGHT ABOUT THE FAKE NEWS MOST OF THE TIME! This is because again, ALL the "agencies" - LIKE NEWS AGENCIES - JUST LIE! PERIOD! It no longer MATTERS if they get caught. The internet generation won't listen to something more than 10 or 15 seconds. So if you get caught lying, just keep talking for a minute or two, and the person you are talking to won't remember or CARE that YOU ARE A LIAR!

Here's my point: "These are 'strange' TIMES we currently live in." Keep your wits about you. You may need them soon.

Paul

PS - This thread was SUPPOSED to be a "joke". Hasn't turned out to be that funny.

All the test tells her is the ethnic origins in her DNA. I don't think they promised much more as part of the test.

No such thing as the absolute truth these days.

The 'ethnic origins' are being overstated "over here". The TV ads claim, (among other things), results like: "You are 27% African American; 13% Native American; 54% Irish; and 6% Swedish." "They" can't do that. Period. Humans are not as genetically 'defined' as that. 60% of our genes are indistinguishable from those of a COW. Therefore, everyone of us is 60% COW according to these "personal" DNA sites.

Interesting Paul. Yeah that's how they presented it in percentages.

Ha ha ha!! Will have to tell my sister to take that with a grain of salt. They did mention she had Iberian origins which is true but the rest I don't know, especially the Finnish/Russian bit.

It's your sister, but were it mine, I probably wouldn't rain on her parade unless there was something important being planned as a result of the "analysis". I have friends that received these things as Christmas presents. I am not going to *** on their Christmas gift. I figure if there is no harm being done, then there's no harm being done.

I was thinking exactly the same thing. Imagine people's response if some "public" company said "Send us your fingerprints and we'll tell you your fortune." People would be screaming bloody murder. But... Send us a DNA sample and we'll tell you your "heritage", and most people don't bat an eye. Would you like the government to have your fingerprints or your DNA PROFILE! How about insurance companies BUYING people's profiles so they can "qualify" you for certain diseases. Remember, they don't have to tell the TRUTH. They just have to SAY that you have to pay higher premiums because "we looked at your DNA and you are a higher risk for lung cancer".

Yes insurance companies was my concern, that's why I will never be doing that test and especially after Paul's insight.

My wife was saying last night as I had shared with her about this thread, that if you had a socialist government taking over here in Australia that doesn't particularly a particular ethnic group (a bit like the Nazis did) they could round up all the people who they have their DNA samples of. A bit extreme but its happened before.
