.308 or .30-06

As some of you know, I have come to the decision (after many many posts) that I am purchasing a .308 Winchester instead of the ol' .30-06. Many of you have talked to me about this, but I have been thinking. It seems that a .30-06 would be better all-around because of the longer case and more powder. So why a .308? Any comments would be appreciated.
