Be nicer than necessary.

Of course I could say that the 7x57 was the parent case of all except the H&H........ ;)

Ok, I will say...the 7X57 is the great grandfather of them all! I retract my '06 vote, and vote the 7X57......Poll should now read 4-3-3-0...God Bless Paul Mauser.... easy poll. Regards, Rick.

Since you left out the .458 win mag parent case,I guess I will have to pass on voting     Jack

Since I can only think of about 2 or 3 cartridges spawned by the .458 it wasn't really even a starter.
Sorry, Jack........:p ;)

i find .30-06 and .308 to be interconnected in a way to make them one vote option. both use .30 bullets and velocity (by my charts) is rather close (while .30-06 is notciably higher). that and arn't .308 cases shortened .30-06 cases basically?

Mmmm, well, the development of the .308 certainly started with the 30-06 case but if we want to go there we can go back further and say that the 30-06's development began with the 7x57 case.
O.k., so you can't form a 30-06 case from a 7x57 case, but the case head is the same size and basic shape is basically a taller 7mm case.
In fact, the US commitee that developed the 30-03 rifle and 30-06 cartridge so closely copied the Mauser patterns that they had to pay fines and royalties for breaching more than one set of Mauser's patents.
And I'm talking multiple millions of dollars not long before WW1.....try adding that up in today's inflation.
But since all of these cartridges are giants by themselves, without examining their own development, it's best to deal with them on a "case by case" basis (get it....:D).
Afterall you couldn't call the .243 Win or 7mm-08 a 30-06 wildcat in all truth.

Too many really neat cartridges have been developed from the .30-06 case for me to vote for any other.  My 2nd choice would be the 7x57 but 1st choice has to go to the .30-06 which demanded a specific length magazine/action.

With the development of powders having specific burning rates/densities, the '06 case is even more desireable.  It might even be safe to say that primer, powder, metalurgy and firearm design had to catch up to the cartridge itself.
