I'd make this a poll, but it's not really a 'poll' subject per se. What I'll do is edit this "Original Post" (OP) as new candidates come up in the following posts. Let's keep this to cartridges that you have owned a rifle actually chambered for the cartridge. (That's mostly an admonition to myself, as I have made A LOT of cartridges that I haven't actually chambered a rifle for.)

I'll start this off with my very first ever wildcat: The 7mmx300 Weatherby. That's been followed by the .50 Alaskan (I prefer .50x348 Win). Then came the 8mm Steyr Long Throat, (8mm SLT) and the 8mm SST (Steyr Short Throat) - both cartridges built on the .376 Steyr case necked down to 8mm. Then the .358 Steyr (.376 Steyr necked down to .358.) Then the 8mm Max, the .357 Maximum necked down to 8mm, and the 8mmx.223 Rem, both of which were for the AR-15. Then, another favorite, the .416x348 Win. for the "Cape Gun". Next was the 8mmx.284 Win for the AR-10, followed by the 8-08, the .308 Win necked up to 8mm, also for the AR-10. I have a rifle chambered in .338-08, but that cartridge has been "factory-ized" in the mean time. (You note  a certain 'trend' in the caliber chosen for the above wildcats. ;) ) I have toyed with MANY more, but those are the ones for which I have actually chambered rifles.

Paul

PS - Oops, forgot two rifles in which I didn't do the chambering; .22x.30-30 Win and .257 Krag Ackley Improved.

PPS - Just remembered another one: .17 Predator.

Paul, I'll start on the ones I've owned if I can remember them. (Not sure if I can remember the ones I still own.) Two have been picked up by manufactures of ammo. They're the 17 rimfires. Both suck for the most part. Especially the smaller one.  I'm pretty sure others did them before I did.

17 Stinger
17/22 Mag.
14 Walker
17 Hornet AI
17 Bee AI
17-225 Win.
22-30/30 AI
22-243 AI
22-6mm Rem
22-6mm Rem. AI
228-6mm Rem .....22 Newton
228-6mm Rem AI

These are the smaller calibers that I can remember. I'll add others later as I can remember. .......Paul H

PH,

if you feel so,inclined it would be great to read a new thread about the .14 Walker. What action did you use? Where did you source projectiles, or did you make them yourself? How did you find it to load for? Did you use it on critters?

Gitano, hopefully I will be able to add to the list in about 6 weeks time:cool:

A few more wildcats I've owned. A couple may or may not qualify for cartridges because there was no cartridge but powered by a primer only. The only ones like this was a 17 caliber that was powered by a 209 shotgun primer. I still have it. It's useless for the most part.

12 caliber 22 RF.
R2 Lovell
30-357 .....(357 Mag necked to 30 cal.)
35-30/30 (30/30 necked up to 35 caliber)
8mm Mauser fired in a 7mm Mauser barrel. (Don't try this if you don't know what you're doing.)
35-500 S&W Mag.

I never did get around to making up a rifle for the 6.5 500 S&W Mag. I have it mostly done but I'll finish it before too long.

I don't know if the R2 Lovell would qualify as a wildcat as it was once available from Ambercrombie & Fitch in rifles complete with cases marked R2 Lovell. I'm not sure but I think Stoegers produced rifles in R2 Lovell in the 30's too. ......Paul H

Well my thoughts on your r2 , if the last time there was commercial brass and ammo and a few rifles available was in the thirties I think that is long enough to call it a wildcat. Then considering that it was never really commercially available in a big way I don't think that is stretching it at all. I found a place that would make me brass for my 6.5-06ackley and my 358. Sta both with the proper headstand. It looked like if you wanted to pay the price that made brass for anything you wanted.
