Good day of grouse!!!
Well, went out yesterday with a friend for a full day of grouse hunting. I love grouse hunting, it just seems to be relaxing, and of course, it is a lot of fun as I know most of you know. We saw 11 and managed to get 6 of them. Not bad considering we are only allowed 8 together. The little boy in the picture is my youngest son who just had to be in the picture. Actually he is fascinated by my shotgun, he can even say "gun". he does not have a lot of words in his repetoir yet, so I don't think his mother is to impressed with gun being one off them. First bird we got we saw up the road about 100 yards. Justin brought a .17 for just the occasion. First shot did not connect but the second did. I must say I was impressed. we then went to my favorite grouse spot and did some walking. I had just shot my second bird, went and picked it up, went 35-40 yards down an old skidder trail and was about 25 yards from a 4 pt just feeding broadside in front of me. I really debated going back and getting my bow from the truck, but what are the chances of him waiting for me. He only stayed for about a minute or two and took off in the woods anyway. Was nice to see. I met up with my friend and we staggered through some apple trees and moutain ash berries to see if we could push some up and get some shots. we made our way to a road that runs along the edge of my hunting spot and a field. I stepped out onto the road and looked up and low and behold there were two turkeys standing there. Now that probably doesn't mean much to you, but they are just starting to introduce them back into northern maine. they introduced them downstate back in the late 80's and now they have become pests to some people. There may only be a couple hundered in aroostook county, so seeing one is very rare indeed. It was nice to see them in a spot that pretty much only I hunt. I will be keeping this a secret in hopes that someday it will become a turkey spot. I don't think we will be able to hunt them anyway for another 5 years, if they are able to take the winters. Anyway, quite an eventful day. I have enclosed a picture for your viewing entertainment.
